Energy Management System
An overview of EPSherpa’s functional modules
The EPSherpa Controller is the central control unit of the energy management system and coordinates all energy flows on site in real time. It integrates photovoltaic systems, battery storage, charging infrastructure and other flexible loads into a unified system. The control logic runs locally on the controller – this ensures reliable control within seconds, even in the event of an internet outage.
Key features:
- Simultaneous control of all assets (photovoltaics, battery storage, charging infrastructure, loads)
- Over 500 device integrations
- Local control without reliance on the cloud
- AI-based forecasts for consumption and generation
The battery storage system is intelligently integrated into the overall system and controlled dynamically – depending on electricity prices, PV generation and the load profile.
The system automatically optimises between several objectives:
- Self-consumption optimisation: utilisation of surplus PV energy
- Peak shaving: reduction of load peaks and grid charges
- Cost optimisation: charging when prices are low, discharging when prices are high
- Charging boost: increasing the available power for consumers beyond the grid connection
EPSherpa integrates photovoltaic systems directly into the optimisation process and controls their feed-in power in accordance with grid limits and market prices.
Features:
- Compliance with feed-in limits
- Dynamic curtailment during grid congestion
- Optimisation during periods of negative electricity prices
- Prioritised use for self-consumption and charging infrastructure
The energy management system intelligently controls the entire charging infrastructure and ensures optimal utilisation of available grid capacity.
Key features:
- Real-time dynamic load management
- Prevention of grid overloads
- PV-optimised charging
- Prioritisation of individual charging points
- Adherence to charging schedules
For depot and logistics sites, the system enables proactive charging planning based on departure times, energy prices and PV forecasts.
Other electrical loads (e.g. heat pumps) are also integrated and actively controlled to optimise energy consumption and costs.
Typical applications:
- Load shifting during periods of high electricity prices
- Utilisation of surplus PV energy
- Load shedding in the event of imminent grid overload
- Prioritised usage according to operational requirements
The system takes technical constraints such as minimum running times into account and responds reliably to dynamic load changes.
The system combines real-time data with forecasts and market data to make economically optimal decisions.
Data taken into account:
- PV generation forecasts (weather-based)
- Consumption forecasts (AI-based)
- Day-ahead electricity prices (e.g. EPEX Spot)
This enables EPSherpa to automatically take advantage of favourable time slots and systematically tap into cost-saving opportunities.
The web-based monitoring portal provides complete transparency over all energy flows within the system.
Features:
- Live dashboard for all systems
- Historical data analysis
- Alarm and fault notifications
- Reports and data export
- API integration for third-party systems
- Portfolio monitoring across multiple sites
All relevant data is available at all times, enabling informed optimisation decisions.
